Medieval and Early Modern Studies

What is available in the Proctor Library

While the Proctor Library's Heritage Collections do not include any medieval manuscripts, we currently have five manuscript leaves in the collection. For access, please contact Miss Owens.

  • Pope Gregory IX's Decretals, c.1350, Italy
  • Communion Prayers, c.1450, France
  • Matthew 2:1-6, Book of Hours, c.1470, France
  • Luke 1:46-55, Book of Hours, c.1475, Bruges, Netherlands, possibly by Willem Vrelant
  • Hymn for the Common of a Virgin, c.1600, either Italy or Spain [donated]

Also, in the RBFIR department are facsimiles of the only U.S.-produced illuminated manuscript (1990s). This is the St. John's Bible, and we have all seven volumes.

The Proctor Library's Heritage Collections do not have any incunabula, but the following is a list of examples of the 16th to 18th centuries books that are housed in RBFIR. Please note, this is not a complete list:
