Open Educational Resources (OER)

This libguide is primarily designed for the faculty at Flagler College. It is my hope and expectation that we will use this as a platform to learn about, and discuss the opportunities and nuances of Open Educational Resources (OER’s). I also hope it will inspire us to expand our use of OER’s at Flagler College.

So what exactly are Open Educational Resources (OER's)?

Below are a few working definitions of Open Educational Resources (OER's)

Hewlett Foundation

The Hewlett Foundation defines “open education” to encompass the myriad of learning resources, teaching practices and education policies that use the flexibility of OER to provide learners with high quality educational experiences. Creative Commons defines OER as teaching, learning, and research materials that are either (a) in the public domain or (b) licensed in a manner that provides everyone with free and perpetual permission to engage in the 5R activities– retaining, remixing, revising, reusing and redistributing the resources.

UNESCO

"Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching, learning or research materials that are in the public domain or released with intellectual property licenses that facilitate the free use, adaptation and distribution of resources."
